Welcome to our NASA Land Surface Hydrology/Soil Moisture Field Experiments Archive.

Since 1997 we have been actively involved in a series of field experiments designed to measure soil moisture from aircraft and satellite remote sensing. Soil moisture is the key state variable controlling the exchange of water and energy between the land surface and the atmosphere and is, therefore, an element in climate and hydrology modeling. The soil field experiments supported by NASA and the USDA in Oklahoma and Iowa provided an opportunity to test the ability to accurately measure soil moisture using state-of-the art remote sensing devices coupled with in-situ observations by scientists on the ground.

Our archive contains soil physical property information and associated land surface information that can be used in conjunction with observations made during the soil moisture experiments and in post-experiment modeling and analysis studies.
